It was the perfect setting that everyone hoped for. The Filipino/American mixed martial arts fighter Phillipe “The Filipino Assassin” Nover made his return to the UFC at UFC Fight Night Manila. After five years away from the organization, Nover made his return to the UFC when he faced Yui Chul Nam in a featherweight bout on May 16, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 66.
After stints in Bellator and becoming the Ring of Combat Lightweight Champion Nover was set to go back to the UFC. The stage was set for the Filipino to make his return in his home country in front of screaming fans that came out in droves to see the home town fighter take on a very tough Yui Chul Nam who came into the fight with an 18-4 record.
Nover fed off the crowd for the first round with numerous take downs where he controlled the fight on the ground. As the close fight went on both combatants traded blows but in the end the fairy tale comeback to the UFC became a reality as the early lead proved too much in the eyes of the judges, earning Nover a split decision victory and improving his record to 12-5-1.
This was a fight not only for redemption but to prove to his fellow countrymen and to himself that he belongs amongst the top elite MMA fighters.
“To get back in the UFC is a dream I’ve been pursuing over the last five years,” Nover said. “On top of that, to be back in the UFC and to be on the first UFC card in Manila is an absolute dream come true. It’s one of the best feelings I’ve had in the last few years of my life. Just getting that phone call was amazing. It actually happened on my birthday. My manager called me in February and told me I was back in the UFC and that I was fighting in Manila. I couldn’t believe it. I was doing back flips I was so excited. It’s just the perfect way to come back and I couldn’t be more excited for this fight.
“This is absolutely all about redemption. This is my comeback. I had a lot of fans following me before, but after a couple of losses and moving out of the UFC, they lost track of me. They probably have no idea what I’ve been doing these past few years and it is going to be great to come back and show what I’m made of. This is definitely a feeling of redemption. I’m going to come back and prove to the UFC, the fans and myself that I belong here because I believe that I not only belong in the UFC, but that I belong at the top of the division.”
